Bridging Neuroscience • Culture • Technology
to Advance Trauma Response in Humanitarian Emergencies.

It's been 3 months since we launched the Sankofa Project. We followed-up with our first 46 graduates and documented a 89.2% reduction in severity of trauma symptoms. Results are sustaining, and the community is uplifted. Thank you to all of our supporters for making our work possible!

"I have come to the conclusion that human beings are born with an innate capacity to triumph over trauma. I believe not only that trauma is curable, but that the healing process can be a catalyst for profound awakening—a portal opening to emotional and genuine spiritual transformation. I have little doubt that as individuals, families, communities, and even nations, we have the capacity to learn how to heal and prevent much of the damage done by trauma. In so doing, we will significantly increase our ability to achieve both our individual and collective dreams"
- Peter A. Levine, Healing Trauma: A Pioneering Program for Restoring the Wisdom of Your Body
While 82% of our participants who survived both the Ebola crisis and civil war reported that their worst traumatic memory was related to the virus epidemic, our statistical tests indicate that the severity of trauma symptoms is still strongly associated with severity of their war experiences 14+ years ago.
Trauma doesn't often improve with time, and subsequent traumatic experiences only make it worst. It is normal that they would feel more triggered by recent experiences, but that is a reflection of a destabilised nervous system that will continue to overreact after every life threat if gone untreated. It is never too late to provide support.

In only 7 sessions, we are documenting a clinically significant reduction in trauma and depression symptoms among participants. Help us bring the same method to South Sudanese refugees in 2018 by purchasing a bracelet at: SecondChanceAfrica.org/purchase

Sankofa trauma relief group 1 of 100. Symptom improvements reported by 5 out of 10 participants at session 2 (of 7). We are documenting every step.
A monument to remember Ebola victims. Some of the locals who survived shared with us that they avoid walking by it as it has become a traumatic trigger.
The end of the outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Liberia was declared by WHO on January 14, 2016, but survivors are still struggling to cope.
In our outreach yesterday in the Banjor region, one of the most impacted, 62% of community members interviewed met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD. Among those who survived the virus, 100% diagnosed for PTSD. None of the communities we visited received psychosocial care since the outbreak ended.
Our Liberian frontline team is ready to launch the Sankofa Project today. The first community we are working with was highly impacted by Ebola. We will be bringing trauma relief to individuals who recovered from the virus and a long civil war but are still struggling and traumatized by both experiences. Stay tuned for more details and updates.
